Everyman Cinema, Muswell Hill

This grade II* listed George Coles designed cinema, dating back to 1934, is the best surviving example of the German Expressionist style, with the most elaborate interior of any Odeon Cinema nationwide.

Until the summer of 2015, the cinema was occupied by Odeon. Everyman then acquired the site and Firstplan has worked with their designers, Fusion DNA, to secure a series of refurbishment works throughout to facilitate Everyman’s occupation, including the reinstatement of the magnificent lower stalls which had been abandoned for the last forty years. The project presented the challenge of sensitively restoring the cinema to its original beauty, whilst ensuring that the renovations incorporated the flexibility and bespoke décor of the Everyman brand to create a viable 21st Century business. The project included detailed negotiations with Historic England and Haringey Council, and the coordination of a public exhibition.

Firstplan successfully secured planning permission and listed building consent for the refurbishment of the entire building, the addition of two new pod screens within the circle, to create five screens ranging from 40-250 seats, and works to enable the re-opening of the lower stalls. As well as the screens, the cinema also offers two bars, a restaurant and outside space.

Firstplan is delighted to have been shortlisted for The Planning Awards 2017 for our work on this project in the category ‘Award for best use of arts, culture or sport in placemaking’ and ‘Award for best use of heritage in placemaking’.

Cartier, New and Old Bond Street

Firstplan has successfully advised Cartier on the refurbishment and improvement of their two existing stores on New and Old Bond Street, including obtaining consents for external alterations and new signage.

Design, conservation and listed building issues were of paramount importance in respect of both of these stores. Firstplan undertook detailed reviews of the Council’s relevant guidance in respect of Bond Street, and was able to work with architects and designers and negotiate with Council officers to ensure that the client’s objectives could be fulfilled as far as possible. This involved devising an effective planning strategy to allow more contentious design proposals to be pursued but ensuring that consents could be secured within restrictive timescales.

Belgrave Square, Belgravia

No. 4 Belgrave Square is a Grade I listed property in Belgravia. The square is home to a number of grand Georgian properties, which are listed for their special architectural and historic interest as part of a grand terrace of houses designed by George Basevi. Working closely with the client and the architect, Firstplan obtained planning permission and listed building consent for a rear extension, replacement windows, internal and external repair works together with the installation of ventilation plant within the lightwell.

The planning permissions and listed building consents have enabled the client to undertake improvement and refurbishment works to bring the property up modern standards for a family dwelling, whilst retaining its historic character and charm.
